On 25 February 2013, the European Parliament adopted "a resolution with recommendations to the European Commission on combating violence against women".
The resolution requests the European Commission to table "a draft law by 2014 to prevent violence against women and also to develop an EU-wide strategy and an action plan to fight all forms of violence against women and girls". "The report calls on member states to introduce prevention measures, education programmes and trainings, exchange of information and best practices, awareness-raising campaigns and better data collection".
It has also been recommended to establish a “European year to end violence against women” within the next three years, to raise awareness of "this widespread problem which affects all of the EU’s member states".
