India calls for more female participation in UN peace endeavors

India's permanent representative in the United Nation Security Council, Asoke Kumar Mukerji, stressed the importance of including women in the UN's peacekeeping endeavors: "The participation of women in all aspects of the prevention and resolution of conflicts is an important policy measure which the Council should encourage while mandating peace operations." Mukerji went on to emphasize that the UN's peace work should increasingly focus on "peacebuilding", rather than "peacekeeping".

India has a history of employing women in their UN operations, sending an all female police unit to the UN's peace efforts in Liberia in 2007 and currently employing 137 women in world-wide UN missions. Read more at www.business-standard.com
