South African Constitutional Court lacks women

Reading time: 1 minute

Since Judge Themible Skweyiya retired in May 2014, his seat on the South African Constitutional Court has remained empty. Last month, civil society organisations have renewed their long-standing call for another female Constitutional Judge. This demand is important, since South Africa's highest court lacks female representation: Out of 11 judges, only two are women. It is also the only court whose representation of women has gone backwards - until 2009, three women were appointed Constitutional Judges. Popular candidate Mandisa Maya was nominated for a seat in 2012, but ultimately rejected.
