Last week, the United States Supreme Court has begun hearing arguments for and against the constitutional right to same-sex marriage. This landmark hearing will decide whether same-sex marriage is legal nation-wide and would force the 13 states that oppose non-heterosexual unions to recognize them. The nine supreme justices have been narrowly divided on gay-rights issues, most recently ruling in favor of gay rights in the context of federal benefits. A decision on the case is expected at the end of June.
