In response to pressure by the White House, the US Department of Defense is considering opening the military service to transgender people. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter has established a working group that is to study the effects of transgender service, of policy and of military readiness over the coming 6 months. Currently, transgender people serving the military are no allowed to take hormones or act upon their transgender identity, for example by living in barracks different from their established government status.
