On 13 June 2013 the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) presented the Gender Equality Index during a launch conference in Brussels.
The Gender Equality Index is part of the EU - “Strategy for the Equality between Women and Men 2010−2015". According to EIGE, the Gender Equality Index is specifically tailored for the goals of the EU-Gender Equality policy, working with a “Gender Approach” instead of a “Support for Women Approach”. This means also men are being taken into account.
Included in the Index are six core domains (work, money, knowledge, time, power and health) and two satellite domains (intersecting inequalities and violence). Results are being presented on EU-level (EU-Average) and the level of the member states. In each domain the current standing of every member state concerning the achievement of Gender Equality is portrayed.
