In January 2011 the Ugandan human rights activist David Kato was murdered in his Kampala home. In honor of David Katos’ work the DKVVA was founded to give credit to Katos’ work and other leaders who work for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people all over the world.
Once a year an inspirational individual who demonstrates courage and outstanding leadership in advocacy for LGBTI sexual rights is awarded with the DKVVA including a one-time grant of $10,000 to support their work.
