Young women in South African municipality KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) may apply for a scolarship programme if they bring medical evidence of their virginity.
Women's rights activists are deeply concerned about the programme, that targets only women, but exempts men and potentially silences the debate about preventing and living with HIV/Aids, as well as the fact, that sexual acitivity often comes without the consent of the respective women. So far, 113 young women are granted "Maiden's Bursery Awards".
