Reproductive justice combines the demands for reproductive rights with social justice. This results in the right to sexual self-determination and the freedom to decide whether to have children or not. In order for all people to be able to make self-determined decisions about their bodies, parenthood and family, resources must be distributed fairly globally and existing power relations must be ended.

Whether, how and with whom we have children is a very intimate question, but also one of social justice. The brochure introduces the activist concept of Reproductive Justice as developed by Black feminists in the 1990s in the U.S. and transfers it to struggles for reproductive self-determination and equitable distribution of resources today in Germany. Population policy under the guise of protecting life – the history of Section 218

Section 218 has been a topic of intense political debate ever since it was first incorporated in the Criminal Code of the German Empire on 15 May 1871. It has always been one of the most controversial paragraphs in German law, both legally and socially. In 1995, a compromise solution was found, but since then nothing more has changed. To find out why that is so, and work out what can be done about it, it’s worth taking a look back at the history of Section 218.
